Russian LGBT to demand state guarantees for their rights

Representatives of LGBT-movement plan to gather in Moscow this fall to discuss their community strategy.

"We have arrived at a conclusion on the need to determine the aims and methods of LGBT-movement in the mid-term, for the next three to five years. To this end, we propose to start a discussion with participation of LGBT activists and interested representatives of civil organizations, and the results of this discussion will be made at the All-Russian conference of civil organizations for development of the LGBT movement in Moscow in October," Russian LGBT network executive director Igor Petrov said at a roundtable in St. Petersburg.

Some 200 people, human rights activists and representatives of LGBT-community will be invited to the Moscow conference, he said.

"Our main goal - is to get the state to recognize that Russia has a discrimination problem regarding sexual orientation and we also want to achieve state guarantees for the rights and freedoms of gays and lesbians," Petrov said.

The conference will also discuss the document outlining the strategy of LGBT community relations with the authorities. In particular, they will seek a ban on discrimination by sexual orientation.
